Embed a Microsoft Document Live in an Update

How do I get an embed link from OneDrive? How do I display Sharepoint documents as an update? Can I put a Power Point on the Today Page?

Embedding a Microsoft Document on the Today Page

You can embed a Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document to display directly on your Today Page. The document will display live, meaning changes saved to the file will automatically update on your LENS Today Page update.

These steps work as long as your file is saved in OneDrive.

In the Microsoft OneDrive Document:

The example below uses PowerPoint, but the same instructions apply to Word and Excel.

Access the embed code for your document:

  • Open the file in SharePoint

  • Click File

  • Click Share

  • Click Embed

  • A window with embedding options and a preview will appear

  • Choose the window dimensions

  • Copy the Embed Code

In an Update on LENS:

  • Navigate to the Today Page

  • Create a new Update

  • Select the three-dot menu of the text editor

  • Click the <> "Code View" icon

Note: You will know you are in code view when the <> icon is blue

Add Embed Code

  • Paste in your embed code here

  • Click the <> icon again to exit code view

Note: You have to click the <> icon again in order to save your embed code!

  • See the preview

  • Click Save if you like what you see.

Your document now displays live on the Today Page. Users can:

  • View live changes as they are made

  • Page through slides (if PowerPoint)

  • Download the document

  • Present directly from LENS

Disclaimer: The screenshots in this article were captured using an earlier version of LENS. While some visuals may look different, the overall functionality remains essentially the same.

Troubleshooting

Embedding may not work for the following reasons:

  • Permissions: The ability to view the file depends on your SharePoint permission settings. For details, see Permission levels in SharePoint.

  • Administrator Restrictions: Site collection administrators may block embedding content from external websites. If so, you may see an error that says: “Embedding content from this website isn’t allowed.” Contact your administrator for support.

If you continue to experience issues, contact your local IT department.
